A La Carte

My brother and I went to The Lot in NW Bend last night for fries. I have a thing for fries. (I have that same thing for waffles, which I will address later in this blog.) They are a comfort food, so you crave and search them out as if you’re the proverbial pregnant woman. Gotta have fries, NOW. Problem is, reliably GF fries are hard to find. Most are made in shared fryers that may also accommodate items like onion rings or flautas, which usually contain wheat, so the oil becomes cross-contaminated.

A la Carte, the kelly-green food truck at The Lot, makes delicious fries in a dedicated fryer. No wheat item touches the oil. You can make an entire meal of this heaping plateful of crisp, slim potatoes. Being a fry purist, I like mine with nothing more than a load of sea salt. A la Carte offers a selection of other toppings, but watch out. “If you can’t eat gluten, steer clear of the sauces and gravy,” said a helpful guy at the window.

A la Carte offers more than fries, though. Their mainstay is tacos, and most are GF.

We tried a few, including the “Sexi-Mexi Style” shredded pork with salsa verde, and the spicy shrimp taco sautéed with a tangy, chili-lime seasoning, topped with chipotle-citrus sour cream and pineapple salsa. The veggie is stuffed with sautéed vegetables, pepitas and cilantro. All come topped with a crunchy radish and cabbage relish.

The bar carries a gluten-free beer as well as cider, kombucha and wine for GF diners.
